New York: US and European antitrust officials approved Google’s US$12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, clearing the way for the search giant to not only manufacture its own phones but also, more importantly, gain a much bigger patent portfolio.
The US Justice Department said in a statement that it had closed the investigations it had open regarding the merger, stating that the acquisition would be “unlikely to substantially lessen competition”.
Google hopes the deal will give it an edge over competitors such as Apple and Samsung – and boost its Android operating system.
Approval from China, Taiwan and Israel is needed before the deal is completed.
